MELISSA JOHNSON
Picture
Hi, thank you for taking the time to glance through my site.
My name is Melissa and I  am the owner of Otway Yoga. I am a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and teach classes here in the beautiful Otways. I have been  a practitioner of yoga and meditation for over 20  years now and  have been teaching Iyengar yoga for the past 12 years.

I established my business, Otway Yoga in 2017 when my family and I moved down to the Otways. Here I teach classes to all levels of students in Birregurra and Colac.

I have been to India numerous times to practise and study yoga and meditation and have had the privilege of  training with B.k.S Iyengar and  family in Pune India. I continue to study and practise with various Senior teachers throughout Australia and Overseas.

Practising and teaching yoga has been such a blessing in my life. I believe that yoga is of immense value as it is a means for us to heal ourselves and live a healthier and happier life. In my classes I aim to help students connect with their bodies and promote a deeper understanding of self awareness.

My family and I live in a cute little shack off grid in the Otways. We live a simple, quiet life working towards being as sustainable as we can and connect  with the beauty of nature that surrounds us.

Iyengar yoga was developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. It is based on the philosophical writings of yoga compiled by Patanjali in his text "The Yoga Sutras"

B.K.S Iyengar was a world  renowned yoga teacher who has inspired many yoga practitioners around the globe. He wrote numerous books including "Light on Yoga", which contains detailed descriptions of more than 200 postures. Up until his passing in 2014 he continued to dedicate his life to the practice, teaching and writing of Yoga.

Some of the  major characteristics of Iyengar yoga are, precision and alignment of the asana (pose) and pranayama, this is essential for maximum physical, physiological and psychological benefits. Props such as blocks, bolsters, chairs and belts may be used to help support various asanas and aid in minimising the risk of injury or strain.

These props were invented and introduced to the yoga community by B.K.S Iyengar which has allowed majority of people access to yoga and its enormous benefits. Sequencing and timing of the asana is also very important in Iyengar yoga as different poses create different effects within the body.
